My first spatial design assignment at Willem de Kooning was to make a capsule that you fit into yourself.

Before we started designing the capsule, we made different models every week to get acquainted with the concepts of Space-light, Object, Order, Construction and Surface.

Models:

We also made a space helmet. First you had to make the inside of this that lets you experience a space and then the outside that contrasts with the inside.

The capsule had to be made from cardboard. We also received various construction lessons to learn what different folding techniques are.

Then I started the final design of the capsule in the form of 1:10 scale models.

I have used a work by Jan Schoonhoven as inspiration.

First model:

Second model, floating off the ground and also light through the roof:

I got closer and closer to the final design. The capsule still consisted of one piece. For the final design I divided the capsule into four parts that can serve as 4 separate capsules or that can be joined together. The main reason for this was that transporting the capsule could be easier this way.

For the final design I made one more adjustment. I have made a slight bent in the capsule. Now the focus is more on the capsule than on the hole through the capsule when you look into it.

Third model, final design:

I gave the final design the title order and disorder. Order is the even distribution of areas in each part of the capsule and the capsule parts connected to each other. Disorder are all flaps on the side of the capsule that all tilt slightly differently, the capsule separate from each other that can stand together and the rotating inside.

For the 1:1 capsule, I collected cardboard from a local bike shop.
